Since moving to wordpress things are getting interesting and changes are occurring everyday. I am working on two etsy shops, making new things daily and getting ready to take classes on how to create websites for others.

A Thank You Note

When we make with our hands. So much of ourselves becomes a part of the piece. When we give with our hands a piece of us goes with it. I create things because I have to. Something in me starts to brew, an idea, a vision and I have to get it out.

And when that something happens at the same time an order is placed it's like a lightening strike. The stars align and things just flow.

I make for myself, for others. I create for my mind and spirit. It truly makes me happy to take something and turn it into a new something. Yarn that is simply fibers spun and turning it into a scarf, washcloth, art. Taking stone, hard cold stone and putting a story on it, giving it life.

How does all this self fulfillment benefit you? When an order is placed I work on it. Not thinking about how much money I made, how this looks for my stats. I think of who it is for, who will enjoy it and how it will be used. I think of how to package it, making a gift even if the purchase is not intended as a gift. I put joy into the item. Never thinking of a negative while I work. I truly love what I create and that love is in every piece.

I am certain other crafters in every form feel the same thing. They make because something in them drives them to do it. And they give because something in them wants to share that love, that desire with others.

So whether you make food for your family, jams during the holidays to give to friends, run a handmade business or simply support those that do. I thank you, thank you for supporting... love, life and a need to create.

New Items in the Shop

Hi There, It has been a while but The shop continues on with a few new and very exciting changes.

In the NEW SHOP theforksfarm.com on etsy there are the usual suspects, but I have found a new Coaster that deserves a little spotlight.

Tile coasters in SLATE. You know the old chalkboard, black slate that you had to write on in Grade School. Well here are its mini twins. I was so excited when I saw these and immediately thought of white ink.

Organic Baby

Wash cloths for the Organic Cotton Fans. I worked on new stitches this summer and finally found one that looked great, felt great and made a pretty excellent wash cloth. They have a wave to them, a textured bubbled type of a wave. Now lets talk COTTON.

Have I mentioned that I love cotton. I have in the past used Acrylics and wools. Wools leave me itchy and Acrylic well it feels like acrylic, insanely silky smooth and soft but when I work with it and hear a slight squeaking as it passes my fingers, I just don't think something that lays on your body or gets you clean should make noise. Making myself laugh as I type this, now all I think of is the saying "squeaky clean" funny.

This Cotton is ORGANIC, soft, plush smooth and squeak free. The yarn is spun (not by me, still have to learn that skill) on the looser side of most cotton yarns. That looseness gives it a feel that is hard to explain, like the soft fluffy feel of cotton balls, the really good ones on the top self.

Right now the shop has Mix and Match Set of 3 available. You pick the colors to either give as a gift for a new baby on the way or and this one I love... keep for yourself and make that bath even better.

New Items and a New shop

The past 6 months have been a whirlwind of ups and downs and a lot of moving. My Husband who is in the Army and was Deployed to Afghanistan came home after only being gone for 3 months due to an explosion. He is getting better with every passing day. And with that came upheavals, stress questions, worry and slowing down on the shop and life in general.

As everyday passed that my husband started to recover so did my creative juices and finding that a new (additional) shop with a new start and new items that had been created out of a darker time needed to spring up. The New shop is called The Forks and carries handmade items for Kitchen and Home.

Coasters and Tea Towels with handmade prints and designs

The Forks, the name for the hopeful farm and business came about quite simply. A few years back a person bent a fork creating a cuff and gave it to his friend. Then slowly all his friends had a fork. The forks became a bonding, a link, a reminder. Great times, friends and places. Years have gone by and although there is land or oceans separating us, the forks are still bound together. What better way to honor friendship and memories then to name a dream after something cherished.

The Forks Farm also has a Blog chronicling the process of dreaming and planning a small family farm as well as cultivating a business from scratch.

Tehlia.com is still going and will be adding new items very soon. From Fiber Jewelry, organic Spa items, to one of a kind baby beanies.

Organic Shapes Made From Hemp

I purchased some Hemp Twine yesterday and stared at it for some time before I took a hook to it. I knew I wanted to work with it but I had no idea what it would become. Another minute passed and I picked it up with a larger hook and began working in a circle. Thinking to myself...

"This could be a bowl, a little decorative thing, misshapen and art like

or what about a sweet little coaster."

At first I thought a coaster might be to simple. It might be something that people would just go to Cost Plus (World Market) or Pier One. It might not be something that sells.

Then I started to take a few pictures of them and decided they looked good. They had character that a machine can't produce and are not only unique due to the non use of patterns but also organic and natural in material and shape.

Making a few more sets and then adding these Organic Coasters to the shop.

Vegan Valentine, why cotton?

Why not cotton?

The reason I choose to work with mostly if not all cotton is personal. When I first started crocheting I began with a blanket for my unborn nephew and I chose Cotton. Searching through all the yarn and touching each roll I kept going back to the cotton section. Kept touching it and even holding a roll as I walked back to the other yarn sections.

The Wash

I love the way it feels smells and works. I tried, about a year ago, to use wool, alpaca blends and other blends I loved the colors they came in and some of the different textures. But the one thing I didn't like, it turned me into an alpaca when I was done working, hairs and fibers all over me and my studio. The other issue, I was left a little itchy. So I stopped working with it. And decided if it bothers me then it must bother other people. So my shop inadvertently became vegan. *many people have wool allergies

The Infinitely Cotton Collection

My favorite cotton of course is organic and that can be pricey. But the quality, look, feel and smell, yes smell its subtle but there, is one hundred times better. Getting my shop into 100% organic is a challenge. The bright colors I love don't always come in organic cottons. So I try when I can to work it into my designs and scarves. But for now you can know that animal blends will not be in my shop.

The New Soap On A Rope

I love using bar soap, all natural vegetable bar soap. And I have always liked having a good and constant lather of soap on my washcloth.

I would wrap the cloth around the soap like a little gift wrapped package. The soap would slip out fall on the tub floor with a thud and I would repeat the process.

White Soap Cozy

Some people call them Soap... Cozies, savers, pouches. I call it genius. Not my own genius there are many options out there in turns of a cozy for your soap.

Mine have an added touch of detail with a slight ruffle when the drawstring is pulled tight. The draw string is long enough to place around your wrist.

Black and Grey Cozy

Never experiencing the Soap drop again. Once bath time is over hang the cozy from the spout or knobs in the shower and let it air dry.

A Holiday, A Party and A Lot of Love.

Hope everyone is having a great holiday season. The Shop hit a huge milestone... 150 Sales!!!!

I was ecstatic but I didn't have my Soldier to share in the celebration. This week however I was given the best gift. A Full week with my husband. Cold outside, warm cozy hotel to lounge in and lots of time and laughs. Being a Military spouse gives you a different perspective on time... apart, together and all the rest that we call marriage. So I am taking every minute and holding it close.

The Shop is still in full swing, amazing scarves and washsets, but being in a hotel makes it hard to mail out orders mostly because my full stock is in another state for a few more days. One thing is definite, all this love and happiness is brewing great ideas for the upcoming "holiday". Yep I am going to say it. Valentine's Day.

Reds, Pinks and lavenders are on the way. New spa sets and pretty little things to give the loves in your life.

I am thankful for so much right now. But the most is having my husband by my side for this holiday. I have had such a great year, with etsy and life, but I am anticipating a long new year. This will be our last holiday together for over a year and I am sad. But So So very happy to have him sitting next to me on the floor in a boxed up house, wine in hand, watching movies on tv (the only furniture in the house) and taking every moment in.

Bitter sweet has a new and more meaningful definition to me right now. Every minute counts.

Stay Put or Leave...

My husband is in the Army and getting ready for a deployment... meaning he will be gone, we will be apart for over a year. And with that huge obstacle we have made a few decisions about "what to do with me". We laugh cause its like trying to figure out who will be dog sitting. We discussed whether I would stay "home" which at the time is Kentucky or if I would go "home" which really isn't my home but is where most of my immediate family lives. It was a lot to decide.

Stay put with all our things and house, but be alone without my husband or move to my sisters, out of my home, away from most of my creature comforts and bed, but have company and family for support. So we have decided that the best (not easiest) thing to do was go home.

As Thanksgiving approaches and the busy holiday shopping picks up, I am knee deep in paper to wrap dishes and sorting through clothes to take, box or give away. My husbands gear is spread out amongst the chaos and scarf orders are getting mailed. I just wish there was a way to freeze time and keep him with me longer as well as put all these boxes in a corner and never need them.

The Cutest Custom order ever. These little darlings were at the request of a mom whose scarf kept getting taken and played with. So glad she asked me to make these mini and delightful versions of her scarf.

All Pink Organic cotton scarves. The part that really made these scream adorable.. the wood button. Which Mom had asked for specifically. Love the detail and the fact that the button can be moved in the future as the girls grow.

Halloween is coming, it really is. As a child this event was the highlight of the year, other then birthdays of course. Who could resist dressing up and having one night to get all the candy your plastic pumpkin bucket could handle.

Now as a "grown up" things haven't changed much, unless you count the trading in of a bucket full of candy for a Large glass of wine (personal favorite) and still getting dressed up for the party or just to frighten the kids when they come to your door.

This year we are still discussing the Costume situation but I thought I would get into the mood of the season with something small and simple. Cold air is flowing through my window what more of a reason do you need to pick up a pumpkin Spiced anything at the nearest coffee joint. So I made an accessory to go with those seasonal coffees and keep your hands warm and cozy too.

I am Excited about the Custom orders I have been receiving. One Person is way ahead of the game and has completed all her Christmas Shopping buy having Custom Mini Spa sets made in every color under the Rainbow. Washcloth, Facial scrubby and Bath puff.

The other Request is for 2 mini scarves for two very lucky little girls. These should turn out so adorable. Simple Button closures that will allow the scarves to be worn for years to come. Moving from a Scarf to Scarflette as the girls grow.

What makes custom orders so great? To me it means Someone came across my Etsy Shop and liked something so much that they just had to have it in their favorite colors. Or make it out of a particular Yarn, in a certain size or to match there kitchen. The Other thing... they trust me. I Tried another route but I wasn't feeling it and it seemed a bit confusing to others. So I am HERE and stay HERE. Thank you so much for stopping by. I would love to hear your thoughts and of course I welcome anyone who would like to follow this blog.

This blog will soon have all it's Bells and Whistles, but for now I just wanted to Introduce myself and give you a brief layout of what you can expect.

My Name is Tehlia. I am the original Creator and Designer for Tehlia.com. I make Custom and Original Scarves and Spa items using crochet, as well as Upcycled, Re-purposed items (soon to come) All by Hand. I have been crocheting for over 10 years and as of February 2010 decided to open my first Shop on Etsy. Business has been great and I have learned a lot in this short time. One thing I have discovered is where I want my shop to go. In terms of style, product, items and meaning. When I started I just wanted to get my creations out to the public. And of course I wanted things to sell. Then I began to see that I, although small and one person, have an impact and leave a mark. That I am in complete control of what I put out into the world and want to make sure that what I produce is contributing in a better way. Whether it be Earth friendly or locally made and purchased I know I can change things in my shop and studio one scarf at a time.

So although my shop has started off a little All-Over-The-Place I have found where it needs to go. And where it will go is a work in progress. Slowly, as certain items sell, I will be replacing them with 100% Organic and Vegan, Yarns and materials. The other addition will be eco-friendly, Upcycled and Repurposed household accessories.

I plan to also feature Beautiful and Unique Handmade creations by Designers and Artists. From jewelry, art, apparel and more. There maybe a Foodie Article or two.

Beyond being artistic, crafty and constantly surrounded by what I love to do, I am also a wife to a Military Man and love him completely. My house exists as a world with two realities. One reality is The Army. Military gear everywhere, books about guns, kevlar, camouflage uniforms and of course Bacon cooking at least once a day (he is not vegan or on a rawfood diet). Then amongst all of that you will find the other world, a fridge and pantry full of Veggies, fruits, nuts and nothing processed. There is Yarn, a sewing machine, vegan and raw food cookbooks, yoga mats and a Buddha statue or two. Our Two worlds working together, throw in love and there you have it... reality.

So, I am a 30 something former Air Force Brat, now Army Wife and I try to live life in the moment when ever the Army lets me. I am a Raw food fanatic, Yoga lady who loves creating new recipes, Scarf and home accessory designer and lets not forget Red Wine enthusiast.

The Infinity Scarf Collection.

Finally have enough completed to open the Section in the shop and get some posted.

The Infinity Scarf also known as an Eternity Scarf or even a Cowl is one item that I love. Not only to make but to wear. This collection has 3 different styles.

Infinitely Cotton is casual, All cotton. A very Soft versatile scarf that can be warm Fall, Winter and Spring. Long and loose or Looped several times to create a cowl or collar of warmth.

The Shop of Lovelies

Infinite Fashion has a different side. A more dressed up multiple personality Cowl or Capelet.

Whether it is tied loose with a small bow or pulled tight creating a collar, it remains soft and cozy. I am busy working on other colors for this collection and hope to have a few more to add in just a few weeks.

And finally The Seattle. A mixture of Cotton and Cotton/silk fibers. This scarf is light weight. Perfect for Year round wear. The Seattle will make an appearance in the shop a few weeks from now. I am gathering different colors to complete this collection.

Work Space Smirkspace

Doing my daily rounds this morning - Coffee, breakfast for the Soldier and then dishes, followed by email, facebook fanpage updates, checking etsy and then twitter. Wash and Repeat.

While on twitter today, saying good morning and seeing what friends have to share I came across Froggy Girl Designs and a new Blog post and link up that she is doing called Dishin' About Business. A way to share and inspire the creative Handmade Business ideas, work spaces, issues and tips. This weeks Dish, what does your work space REALLY look like and how do you stay creative?

Well My work space is a little different then most. Whether I am about to create a New scarf, picking out colors for the next washcloth set or Planning this Falls Scarf collection, I start off on the floor.

Yes this is my room I call is my Studio. No chairs, just the floor

I do have a desk (see next picture) but really that might only hold the laptop while I watch a soap or TV show on Hulu and a few odds and ends as well as a buddha statue and finished products before labels get added. So the Floor is were I work best. I purchased a plastic mat that was meant to be under a treadmill or exercise equipment, But I saw it as a place to lay out my yarn with out worry of getting carpet *stuff, fuzz what not, on the yarn or newly finished items.

The Floor allows me to spread out, draw up plans and sketch out ideas on a Dry erase board. I can see all my projects at once. Which I usually have three or four going at one time. Along with custom orders and the next great idea looming in another corner.

I have tried to work at my desk but I feel boxed in and pulled away from my Yarn and paper. I like to be in the thick of it. That is what keeps me motivated and coming back for more. It's like being a writer, in order to be a writer you must write. Well to have a handmade business you must create and doing it daily, in some form, is a great way to stay motivated. For me being on the floor helps me with that. Keeps me in touch with what I do.

The hardest part about Owning your own Handmade business, You are a one woman show. My room is a self contained, production studio, photography studio, labeling and packaging world. So once an item is finished I stretch over to a small table, set up my Items and take pictures. I then plug my camera into my computer and while waiting for pictures to load I start in on the next crocheted item. When my fingers get tired from crocheting I edit the photos and when my eyes start to see double or I can't tell whether it is a great angle I return to my yarn. And don't worry I don't crawl around to do all of this, there are random moments of more coffee or tea getting, some yoga poses and impromptu dancing to a random 80's song that pops on the radio. Plus, lunch for the soldier when he gets home along with Laundry, dusting, dinner and more emails. Not to mention a blog post and visit to the post office. Did I mention I was a one woman show?

This Could Get Messy

I am trying to start a Collection.

It feels like a big word. A word that I only know to use for fashions done by a designer say for the fall/winter season of a certain year. Something exclusive and something beautiful with a theme or idea that ties them all together. So I am going to attempt to do a Collection. A work of fashion and design. All while trying to hold off on putting any of them in the shop until all the pieces are ready. Wish me luck.

But I will give some sneak peaks and glimpses in this process that is a first for me. One thing I need to figure out is what to call this Collection. It involves natural products, organic yarns and the shape of a cowl-infinity-eternity (what ever you wish to call it) Scarf. I would love to hear any ideas you may have for a name, who knows maybe it could be a contest. Thinking about that. But while I think, here is the first half of the first Infinity Scarf

For the first Infinity Scarf I settled on Natural Organic Undyed Cotton.

Custom orders

Sorry for the absence and lack of Etsy Treasury Finds.

My excuse... Custom orders. Three to be exact and I am loving every minute. Although when I first opened my shop I was a little apprehensive to take on Custom orders. How would I quote a price and How would I know what to do? Well that fear went out the window when I was first contacted and now when the requests come in I am just as excited as the first. A key part to custom orders is Communication and asking lots and I mean LOTS of questions.

My fear (before I actually received a custom request) was that I would translate what was being asked of me wrong. But when it happened I found that I naturally wanted to please and know EXACTLY what they wanted.

Organic Navy Blue Cotton Scarf

The most recent custom orders have been so great to come across. One order that was recently mailed out was a custom scarf, 100% cotton and ORGANIC. Jen from Itty Bitty Bag on etsy had an exact color and scarf style that she liked but kindly asked if I could make it in Organic cotton. Of course I jumped at it. Working with Organic Cotton was a dream and I am hoping to convert my entire shop over.

But doing that will have to wait for two reasons. I received my First Wholesale order. For a coffee shop in Washington. Coffee cup cozies and I am so Excited. She only asked that I include a variety but to make sure I get the local High schools colors in. And the Other was a Scarf, one of my very first custom scarves, Wrap me in bacon, has come up again and looks like I a making two versions of that mind boggling work of wearable art/breakfast delight.

Getting started on Etsy part2

Part 2 of Getting started on Etsy.

You have found Your Etsy name (from part 1). You shouted it from the roof tops and have gotten your friends involved. Now to building your Shop. First would be your Policies and Profile.

When I first started I didn't have much. I had simple policies, paypal payments, shipping and return options. Very simple and very short. But as items sold and as I came across small things that could have happened but didn't I decided to put more detail into my policies. I didn't want to make it overly complicated but I wanted it to be clear and cover most scenarios. I also Copied that entire page and include it in my invoice that gets sent with the item to the customer. The biggest thing I left out, explaining that Handmade items can have unique attributes and inconsistencies. Second to that was My custom order return policy. You can decide what is best for you. But for myself I decided that once production and deliver was done there would not be returns on Custom orders.

With my Profile I was mixed up a bit. I had half of my profile on the Announcement page and then the other half written in my actual profile. The Profile was pretty plain just explaining my items and how long I had been making things. Once I realize I was too spread out I condensed the Profile page and included a bit of a personal touch to it. But with all things I am still working on it.

The great thing about getting my front page, Announcement space, cleared up I was able to put information that was meant to go there. Announce new items, sales or a little blurp about a particular product. It also made it short enough so that when you first come to the page you could see my featured items just enough to know that you can scroll down further on the page. Now I present myself with a challenge everytime I change the announcement to see how small I can make it but with enough detail you want to see the start of the store.

So watch your spelling, make small changes and put the bulk of your info in your profile and policies. Let people get to the reason they came to your shop. To Shop!!!

Orange you glad I didn't say Avocado?

Created this etsy treasury with those two colors. Some combined and others just the basic colors on their own. I started with a search for all things orange until I came across this pendent Made by Sparkle Peach.

The softness of the colors with the orange I like and a deep grey green reminding me of avocados.

On the hunt for something orange What better then a Flower. This Pumpkin colored Rosette hair clip made by The Mustard Seed Co caught my eye. Loved that is was displayed in a picture frame.

I have been thinking of Felting but have so many other things going on, I felt *wink, I should leave it to the Professionals. Here is an Avocado colored Felt Bowl

I decided to make an Etsy Treasury. And it was actually pretty easy and fun to make. The only daunting part was deciding on a Theme or color scheme and I went with Summer reds. How did these items get picked over others?

When I first found Etsy I was apprehensive about starting my own shop. I had never really gone off and done something this Big. Putting what I create out there for the world to judge and see, was a huge step for me.

Once I got over the scary side of it all, with the help of an encouraging husband, family and friends I jumped right in.

The first thing I did was talk about it on Facebook, too friends and family there. I guess I was just putting out feelers. And of course with family and friends they were ecstatic about this new adventure. Then I looked at the calender, put my finger on a date and shouted it from the roof tops that My store would open. This for me made it real. Made it something I was committing to, that if I didn't do it I would be telling all those people they were wrong for thinking I was great. So date on the wall, in annoucements on facebook and then I created my Etsy account.

I didn't think to far into my name for the etsy shop. I hadn't quite settled on what Exactly the shop would be focused on, Would it stay Crocheted or move into a different direction. So to be safe I just used my Name. Not realizing that Dirty Joe Soaps would come about or the Household lovelies side of the shop either. But I am glad I didn't Name it Scarves and things.

But you all know most of this by now. I am writing this post and hope to make it a regular feature due to a few friends taking a leap of their own and starting Etsy shops. They ask for advice on little things and we have been sharing tips that we come across with one another. So I thought I would use a day a week on here to share the info with everyone else.

Step One... Other then thinking about an amazing name, would be spread the word.
If you haven't started your Etsy shop yet but are close to doing so... Start Talking. Talking to friends, family, anyone who will listen. Tell them about it, your art and your future shop. This at least gets your foot in the water and gives you more enforcement to keep talking and one day start doing.

Busy hands Busy days

The past two weeks have been a bit busy. I have been trying to perfect my laundry detergent and finding ways to package and label it all. The Soldier has been such a great help with that. He thought of the name and a few other really amazing things that could be done and added to it. So Dirty Joe Soaps was born and I am so proud of how it has turned out.

I placed that image on Clear stickers and they became the perfect label for the jars of Laundry detergent. Small trial size jars and bigger jars that can hold 14 loads of soap. But I am still hung up on the best packaging for mailing the soap out.

The Jars might be too heavy to make shipping a good deal with the price of the soap (which is fairly low compared to store bought soaps). So I am leaning towards Muslin bags with my logo stenciled on them, with the Detergent securely in a plastic bag inside it. Then the Muslin bag could be reused, recycled or even sent back to me for a refill. Still deciding and searching for a local source (made in USA) for the fabric.

~Happy dance happened when I was featured in TWO different Etsy Treasuries. The first was Pamper Yoruself. It featured Spa type products and my Facial Scrubbies got a spot. The other is beautiful to look at and features Lime & Coconut themed items.

The other fun thing that happened this weekend. I had my first "Open House" or "Trunk show" some may call it. A friend was having a wine tasting party and asked if I would like to be a featured seller. I was flattered and thrilled, oh and a little scared. I didn't know any of her friends and this was a first for me. Putting myself out in front of the crowd to talk and show what I make. Its very personal to show and sell something you make by hand. Felt like I was pushing baby birds out the nest for the first time.

The Host was expecting 7 confirmed guests, a few maybes and some Non-responses. Well She was a little disappointed when 6:30pm rolled around and only 2 guests arrived. I felt so bad for her. She spent a lot of time preparing food for the night and arranging for the kids and Husbands to be out someplace for dinner.

Although only two people came, it turned out to be great. I was able to talk about what I do and create in a very casual and personal setting. Answer questions and show how you can wear scarves in different ways for different functions. Plus the wine was great. Oh, and I did sell an Item. Dirty Joe Soaps a large Jar of 42 washes.

I thought I set up her table well. Made sure you could see each type of product I make from any place you may have been standing, And I brought all the Scents of Laundry Detergent that I was working on.

The Host felt bad that her guests didn't show and kept apologizing. I kept telling her it was fine, that it got me to make and finalize a lot of things that I would have procrastinated on or still be trying to make a decision about. And because I made things specific to sell at the party, that meant I now had a lot of inventory to put up on the Etsy site. I really couldn't have asked for more.

So thankful for amazing friends, a husband who thinks some of what I do is silly and the other things I do are magnificent. Encouragement is all you need sometimes.

I have to say this week has been amazing and it is only half over. I can't believe what wonderful friends, family and fans I have. Truly grateful.

This weekend was a moment of new creations and new memories. The best one was completing an item and posting it on Etsy Sunday afternoon and having it Sold Wednesday Morning. Things are grand. The set was a Spa set that I pondered over for quite some time. The question was pattern. Whether to have a stripe, two stripes, no stripes or all stripes. Nothing was coming, so I stopped thinking and started crocheting.

Washcloths were something I knew I wanted in the Set. But what else, Facial cloths or a bath puff, what about a hand towel? Still working on the washcloth when I settled on Facial Scrubbies and a hand towel. The Hand towel came out great with a stripe on either end, I was so happy with the texture.

Then the facial scrubbies. What a fun thing to create. Sweet circles of Cottony goodness. I wanted them to be small enough to handle but large enough to get the job done. That apparently felt right at about 2.5 inches wide. And to my delight the texture was outstanding. One side was smooth and great for wiping away eye make-up, the other textured side perfect exfoliating.

The best part was noticing that Cotton balls were never going to be purchased in my home again. The entire set is machine washable and Dry. And the facial scrubbies got better and better with every use and wash.

I Made It!!!

This week I have been perfecting Laundry detergent making.

The great search for all the items was in the end, easy. Once I realized that I could use any All Natural Vegetable based Soap the hunt was over. The detergent was the topping of the cake for me. The past few weeks I have been trying to save money and be more thrifty, frugal and inventive with my everyday cleaning. Here is the recipe and grand adventure that lead to Homemade ALL natural Laundry Soap.

First Making Washcloths. I crochet Scarves and sell on etsy. Recently I started to create Washcloth sets. Hoping to save myself money and get rid of the sponge in the Kitchen sink but also to add to my Shop of Lovelies...

Then the Laundry soap happened. Why make these lovely things to only have them ruined with residue build up and chemical soaps.

1 cup Borax

1 cup Washing Soda

1 Bar of soap, grated with a cheese grater or food procesor

Then in a container mix all ingredients together. You will only need 1 scoop of detergent 1 TBSP Only.

I have a front loading machine and it (powdered) work great and cleans so amazingly. Everything comes out so fresh and Clean. Even My Husbands Army Uniforms which are usually covered in Dirt and gun powder. This soap is gentle enough for babies yet tough enough for soldiers.

Can't wait to think of a clever name and add it to my shop of lovelies

What's in a Name?

The Shop has Officially gotten a Domain Name. The Shop of Lovelies . com . I am so excited. But in getting that name I had to change a few things to include a lot of photos and fliers that I had already printed up for a show I am doing in June. My excitement sometimes get the best of me. But here is what the Etsy Banner looks like...

Then in the midst of all the excitement about the shop and my first public showing, my dad is visiting. So I am hoping to show him around my new home and state while entertaining him a bit and balancing this whole new world of Entreprenuer Etsy Handmade and Blogging business thing. But I love it and my father is so excited for me and my newest adventure.

All of this excitement has seemed to spark an even bigger fire of creating. The latest is Laundry soap, among the washcloths that are moving along and the scarves that are getting attention. Oh and a great person The Mother, as she calls herself, from Little Boy Green has asked if I would like to place an Etsy Badge on her blog. She was intregued with my Reusable, machine washable washcloths and felt it went right along with her theme of creating a better world for her son and all of us together. She has great stories, lots of humor and life challenge of helping LBG (little boy green, her son) with his sensitive skin. She was also the push I needed and Supplier of the recipe I am using for my laundry soap obsession, To really get my house moving further in the Handmade Homemade, more efficient and money saving place. Can't wait to test out my New Laundry Soap it smells So Amazing.

The Derby Weekend

Derby weekend, Rain, parties and projects.

Huge thunderstorms, flash flooding and so much more. But The Race Must Go On!!!

The Big O and I went to a friends house Saturday for the Big Derby party and a 4 year olds birthday party as well.

Our Friend Mrs. C had made an amazing Derby hat, Red flowering extravaganza, paired with the prettiest white sundress, yellow shrug and a red rose broach pinned the waist of the dress. Only disappointing thing... I forgot my camera. Hoping she posts a picture very soon so I can "borrow" it to show you all how lovely she looked.

Soon the Newly turned 4 year olds party was over Little C had a blast and I was really excited to give her my gift. She has discovered painting and art. Little C really connects with what she is doing so I ran with that and gave her a pack of small canvas squares with paints of her own. She even has an easel set up downstairs in an Art studio in the House. Very lucky little girl.

This was my first Derby anything, party, watching and of course drinking. It was all the excitement of the Super Bowl. Food and drinks over flowing, betting and commercial watching. Then the race began and as soon as it started it was over. But the party continued on along with the good Cheer.

My project this weekend, other then watching several Million dollars run around a track was to create 4 Bath Puffs.

This Custom Order was for 2 sage green puffs and 2 black with beige puffs. Very excited to mail them out.

New Quality Control Manager

My Husband has taken on the title of Quality Control in the Spa Department

I LOVE making these amazing washcloths and spa sets. My Husband got really excited about them too. Don't tell him you know, but he loves to take baths. If given the chance he would take a bath every hour. To bad he has to work and be all Army guy most of the day. So when I made my first washcloth he had to test it out. Now if he, who is rough on most things didn't break this cloth, then you have to know it is strong. But don't be fooled, his tough exterior only makes him that much more sensitive. The Big O said he loved the texture and how it was soft on his skin.

Then came the Bath Puff. Loved this part. The Big O put a huge dollop of liquid soap on it scrubbed it with his hands and then started cleaning. He was asking me questions as he bathed, yelling from the tub...

"So this is the same as those Plastic puff things?"

yes the same in design.

"But those things start to smell."

Yes they do

"So if this is yarn we can wash them in a few days?"

Exactly. Wash them and put them in the drier. That way they get clean and won't have that smell the Nylon Puffs get.

"Cool."

Then splashing and bubbles continued. It was nice to see The Big O take an interest in my craft, even if it was for more selfish reasons. He thoroughly enjoyed his bath.

A Scarf is Born

My ideas for the style and look of my scarves come to me at different points in my yarn hunting process. Once in a while I have an idea of what I am going to make. But the fun part is when I walk into the store without a plan.

In the store I walk around. Looking at every section of yarn available and touching every one of them. The touch is what leads me to really know what I might create with it. Whether it will be a ruffled looping mass of wonder or smooth simple scarf. Recently I found pinks.

And Now I love Pinks. I was a girl who rebelled against pink. I refused to wear it cause it was a girls color. Then sometime around my late twenties I discovered it and can't get enough. I don't have pink walls and furniture I am not that huge of a fan. My bath towels are white, my sheets are blue and my house for the most part is neutral, earth tones. But pink... I will wear all year long.

However, every now and then the FIRE wants to come out and I want people to see me coming. So Red it is.

And red is what I picked up the last time I went shopping. This go around I took my time picking the style scarf I was going to create. Would it be flat and smooth or cascading with ruffles and loops.

I couldn't decide so I made two different styles. But instead of just red I gave it a twist of Indie "rock-a-billy" flare. One scarf with its Checkered White and red stripe reminded me of Dice hanging from a classic hot rod. The other had a more subtle 1950's flare of a night at the drive-in theatre.

What to do with the left over Yarn that won't fit into the next project and isn't enough to start a new project?

One easy way to use up old or extra yarn is making a Wash Cloth Or Dish Cloth. Not only is it helping clear out your "scarp" draw but it is a practical and technically green way 1. Save money & 2. Stop using sponges and papertowels in the kitchen or bathroom. The "green" recycled aspect is that you can wash and re-use the cloths for anything around the house.

There are great dishcloth patterns on Sugar n' Cream, or Peaches & Creme websites.

For the Dish Cloth I use a small needle Size H or smaller and Wash Cloths for the face and body I use a large needle like K or N. The smaller needles make a tighter stitch which makes a stiffer fabric. The larger needles make a loose stitch and a more flexible "softer" feeling Fabric.

I make them in different sizes depending on the amount of yarn and how crazy I want the pattern to be. Something fun about them not being exactly the same. Its a little freeing to just go with what you have and not worry about it. Be creative.

The Cowl

Cowl. I couldn't find a working definition for this but my own is, a completely circular scarf (tube) that sits snug or loose around the neck and has opening wide enough to pull over your head.

Some are made to be very snug perhaps only an 8 to 10 inch opening at the top and bottom (with yarn there is a bit of stretch) others are wider ranging from 11 - 18 inch opening at the top and bottom. My Cowls seem to work in around the 12-15 inch wide and 10-15 inches high. Roughly a square depending on the direction the stitches may stretch.

I made the cowls pictured out of ALL Cotton. I used Ecru (raw, unbleached) a natural almost beige colored cotton and accent with either burgundy or light blue cottons. The versatility of this scarf/cowl is great. You can pair it with a t-shirt or tank top and jeans, excellent as a pretty and warm accent to a winter coat and gloves.

I like not having to worry about where the ends of the scarf might be while I sip my coffee or grab a bite to eat. It really is a perfect "throw it on and go" kind of piece.

Wrap Me in Bacon is complete.

Interesting scarf to make. It gave me a few headaches, smiles and worries with the turning and switching of yarn textures and colors. But it was a battle of love.

I used 4 different Yarns (manufacturers, colors & weights) The mixture of textures and weights of this yarn make it light, pliable and fun to wear.

Its finished Measurements turned out to be

72 inches Long

& 3 to 6 inches wide

The white and deep rose pink are both 100%cotton at a medium weight, I love the feel of cotton and if it came in every color imagined that is all I would prefer to use. The Lightest shade of pink is a cotton as well, light weight with a silky sheen to it. Camel, Plum wine and burgundy yarns are all Arylic medium weight and very soft.

This is an asymmetrical scarf, no section is the same and the colors weave throughout, starting with the darker "Meaty" area of the bacon and the lighter "fatty" parts on the opposite end.

Prospects of Fall, What color scarf to make next

They named it Persimmon

Playing with colors and patterns. Not sure what to do next. I was laughing at myself while standing in front of an enormous selection of yarn and began to panic. Not because I couldn't reach something amazing on a shelf 16 feet out of reach and now I am wondering why stores do that. But more because I had no clue of what color(s) my next scarf would be. I have found that now I need to look to the future. Although I hate making plans that far ahead, Fall/Autumn is coming and I either need to buck trends and go with my gut or open a fashion magazine and do what is being shown in them (color wise). So I stood and stared until I settled on what caught my eye. Persimmon jumped out at me. Well that was the color the company decided to tell me it was.

A cross between peach, pink, salmon, but brighter, silky color all rolled into one that I suppose could be called Persimmon. I get home with it and stared at it. Usually when I walk into a yarn store I have an idea, a thought as to what I might do with a particular yarn. But this one I HAD NO CLUE. So I continue to stare. I get coffee and stare. Take a shower, come back and stare. Get the mail, go for a walk, make lunch and with each passing I stop, stare and walk away. Hoping soon I will settle on an idea, shape, pattern for this great color that Chose Me. Tomorrow could be the day, I hope, that it stands up and draws out exactly what it will become. Something great I am sure.

How The Bacon Scarf Began

On My facebook fanpage I had a message. "I have seen many bacon scarves, but I especially like your style with the ruffly edges...wondering if you could design a bacon-esque scarf with lovely burgundy/pinks etc...?" in messages later... something feminine and pink, that I could wear almost year round.

Many messages and questions later I began to work. Bacon is a very complex creature, especially when trying to make Yarn Look like the most loved breakfast food. This lover of Bacon has also Started her own blog about the salty goodness of this sublime swine product.

I had always considered myself to be an artistic person but never thought of myself as a sculptor or much beyond paints, as an artist. And not to sound like I am bragging but I feel like I must just a little in terms of this project. I am sculpting Yarn into Food and it is looking AMAZING!!! However it is kicking me BUTT :) I am going for realism with pinks and I have to say I love it. Once complete it will measure 70inches by 6inches at its widest point. I hope to hear that she loves it.

Pretty Pink

The most fun I have while creating a Scarf, is when it is a Custom Order. Not certain what makes it greater then when making my other scarves. Perhaps it is because I know for sure that someone wants it, will love it and will be 100% ecstatic to have it. Pretty Pink was a custom color change. It is similar in size and length to the Lucky Green but (obviously) made in two shades of pink. And made out of my favorite material this month. COTTON. Cotton has a stretch to it and very easy to care for. But something about how it feels, the texture and weight of it as I work it into a scarf is so nice. I have been working a lot with very soft acrylics and wool blends, which can all be a extremely soft and silky to the touch, light weight and the colors are amazing. But cotton has captured my heart for the time being. Perhaps it could capture yours.

Give Me Fever... please

I started working on this scarf Sometime last night.

There is no why to explain this scarf with words and it is unfortunate that the silky sheen of this scarf doesn't translate through my camera. So I will have to try my best to set your imagine wheels turning. The color is a vibrant red, the manufacturers call it Crimson. Think of red red lips on Marylin Monroe and you can imagine the fires this scarf could light. A skinny scarf for any event.

I have been hearing and feeling spring slowly but surely making its way to me. And this scarf when completed would be perfect with a "little black dress" out on the town or a way to set the office ablaze against a spring inspired ensemble. But of course it doesn't end there. Wear it in the spring for a little flare, break it out again during the winter holiday months and then spice up the night for Valentine's day.

Measurements when finished should be 3.5 inches wide and 70 inches long.

Right now in my Etsy shop I have a different red scarf for sale. It is larger, made more for snuggling weather but just as red and beautiful to look at. Made of 100% cotton.

I call it Scarf Art

I really disliked the idea of Squishing a unique creation, that was worked with heart, into an Envelope, then pushing in a card and invoice just to have it all end up wrinkled. The scarf would end up feeling like a secret buy instead of a gift for yourself. So I started to roll this Custom Order Scarf up and BOOM, the scarf almost exploded into this ball shaped flower. I was thrilled. I think I showed anyone who was in the house at the time. This was the start of a wonderful packing experience. I loved the idea that a customer would open their package and see how it was wrapped, personal tag and tissue paper. Then to open it and have an art piece in their hands. Just Thrilled.

So now all the Scarves that leave my hands are treated as Unique pieces of Art. They all have their own way of rolling up. Some turn into complete balls, others resemble old world hay bundles. And most hold together without much help other then their ruffles or loops clasping together naturally.

Say Hello Cotton Candy

This is Cotton Candy. An, oh so sweet scarf.

I created this scarf while it was snowing out my window. I wanted to think of warm sunny spring afternoons and crisp evenings. Well finally the weather has turned just enough to make me want to break out the tanktops cute light weight jackets and this amazingly fun scarf.

It is made from 100% cotton - white yarn, and a sports blend acrylic/cotton blend as the accent. The texture is wonderful. The cotton gives it a weight that is felt but doesn't hold you down and the pattern of the loose loops allows you to "breath".

Measures 70 inches long and 2.75 inches wide.
